Kathryn Munson

Kathryn Munson, age 92, of Milbank died Monday, July 20, 2015, at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank with Father Gary DeRouchey celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at Mundwiler Funeral Home beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Honorary bearers will be all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Michael Munson, Andrew Munson, Joseph Munson, Camden Munson, Tyler Munson, Travis Munson, Patrick Lowary, Dane Munson, and Ryan Mergenthal.
Music will be provided by Sandy Tucholke, organist and the St. Lawrence Funeral Choir. Tim Mundwiler will provide music for the prayer vigil.

Kathryn Ellen (Mauer) Munson was born June 11, 1923, in Madelia, MN. She was the daughter of George and Grace (Daly) Mauer. Kay attended Catholic elementary school in Madelia and graduated from Madelia High School in 1941. Kay was a manager of the Montgomery Ward Store in Estherville, IA. While working she met Sidney H. Munson. They were united in marriage on January 29, 1947, in Estherville.

The couple moved to Milbank, SD in 1947. Together they farmed in Melrose Township and raised their family. Kay was a farmwife that cooked…and cooked…and cooked! She raised huge vegetable gardens and preserved the harvest for the winter months. She was a great shot with a gun and could hit a nail off a fence post! She was a faith filled Catholic woman – always praying for her family. She was an active member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society. Sidney died on October 19, 1995. Kay moved to Sioux Falls and has lived there the past 15 years. A devoted and loving mother, Kay will be greatly missed by her children.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Marie (David) Mergenthal of Elk River, MN; Don Munson of Sioux Falls, SD; Elizabeth (Charles) Lowary of Austin, TX; Steve (Ellen) Munson of Sioux Falls, SD; Sidney, Jr. (Vicki) Munson of Tea, SD; Gordon ( Brenda) Munson of Milbank, SD; Arlin (Mary) Munson of Milbank, SD; Bob (Vanessa) Munson of Brookings, SD; Kathryn (Kevin) Dumke of Hendricks, MN; Lane (Dawn) Munson of Brookings, SD; 23 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Lorraine Mauer of Minneapolis, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Eric, one brother Harold Mauer and five grandchildren.
