Firechiefs Win First Round Game of District Baseball Tournament

The Milbank Firechiefs secured a 5-1 victory over Clear Lake in the first round of the district amateur baseball tournament Saturday in Volga. Milbank improved its overall record to 8-9 with the win.

Milbank jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after five innings of play. Clear Lake plated one run in the sixth before the Chiefs put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh.

Jesse Krause, Taylor Boerger and Matt Stephan led the way for the local’s offense with a double hit. Ronnie Krause, Brock Gomer and Justin Ackerman added a single hit for the Chiefs. J. Krause, Boerger and Tyler Reil each had one RBI to round out the offensive totals.

Boerger went the distance on the mound for Milbank and struck out 12 batters. He allowed just three hits, one run and six walks in the contest.

Milbank faced top-seeded Clark in semi-final action Sunday and were edged out 3-2 in 10 innings. Complete results from the game will be posted tomorrow.

The Firechiefs will now face Volga Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Volga. The winner will be Rep 2 at the state tournament in Mitchell August 5-16. Four teams from the district tournament advance to the state tourney.
