Milbank Koch Elementary, Middle and High School offices are open. Principals, secretaries and teachers are busy getting ready to start the 2015-2016 school term.

The first day of school for students begins on August 24, at 8:15 am.  Due to staff meetings on the first day, school will be dismissed at 2 pm.

Registration has been set for Monday, August 10th from 8 am to 6 pm and Tuesday, August 11th from 8 am to 1 pm.  Also at this time, school pictures will be taken for ALL schools. A second picture day has been set up for September 14, 2015. Retakes will be done October 8, 2015.

Registration for Koch, Middle School and High School will be held in the Milbank High School Lobby.  Students and parents in all grades are asked to report during that time.  It is extremely important that the school has correct mailing addresses and phone contact information.  Registration also gives parents a chance to ask questions and make any last-minute arrangements for their students.  Parents will be asked to fill out Medical Emergency information for each student.  Rural families are asked to list an alternative home in Milbank in case of a severe snowstorm when buses cannot get students to their homes.

When school fees and lunches are paid at registration, it makes the first hectic days easier and teachers are able to concentrate on the needs of their students rather than the administrative details.

Specific instructions for registration are listed below.  If you have questions regarding registration or any other aspect of school, please do not hesitate to call the school offices:  Call 432-6615 to reach Koch Elementary School, Milbank Middle School (Grades 6, 7 and 8) at 432-5519, and Milbank High School (Grades 9 -12) at 432-5546.

School Pictures

School pictures for all Milbank students, K–12, will be taken during registration.  This does include the seniors, as they will need to have their picture taken for their ID card. Picture packets must be paid for when ordered.  Information about the various packets that may be purchased, as well as the cost of each packet, is available in the school offices or the high school lobby.  Parents may also wait to pick up the packet and order form at registration.  Costs for packets vary from $14.00 to $46.00.  A separate check payable to Life Touch is needed for pictures.

***Important: This picture will also be used on the student activity/ID cards and school annuals (yearbooks).

Student and Parent Orientations

Koch School is conducting an Open House for all students and parents on August 20, from 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Come and see the classrooms and visit with the staff. We have been busy making updates and moving classes around. We are very excited for our new changes.

Milbank Middle School is having an open house for all students in grades 6, 7 and 8 and their parents on August 20th, from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm.

Milbank High School Freshman (9th Grade) and parents are invited to an orientation meeting on August 20th at 6:30 pm in the lunchroom.

Orientation meetings are planned to provide information about the school programs and procedures to students and parents before school begins.  Every parent and student should plan to attend.

Parking Passes

If students plan on driving to school, they will be required to obtain a new parking pass. This process requires filling out the application and paying the $10.00 fee. This fee will be collected at the high school registration table.

Grade 6, 7, and 8 Registration

Middle School students should register at the middle/high school lobby.  Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students and parents can report at any convenient time during the two days of registration.

Students will be asked to make final decisions regarding inclusion in band and choir and to update the family registration form.  They will be given locker and class schedules at registration. Middle School Dean of Students, Kristopher Evje, will be available at registration to address any questions or concerns from students or parents.

Koch School Registration

All students and their parents are asked to report to the Milbank High School Lobby during registration days.  School nurses will be available to discuss any student health concerns or to answer questions about immunizations.  Parents need to check family and student personal information and to provide housing information in case of a severe snowstorm.  They will also be asked to fill out Medical Emergency cards.

The first days can be very hectic at the elementary school.  When details are handled at registration, teachers are able to give more time and attention toward assisting students to settle into their new class routines.  Principal Tim Lease will be available to meet parents and answer questions at registration.

St. Lawrence Students

Students attending St. Lawrence School can purchase lunches and activity tickets at their school’s registration.  If it is more convenient, parents may stop at the Milbank High School Lobby during registration days to pay for lunches or activity tickets. Seventh graders who are entering Middle School from St. Lawrence are considered “new students” and need to bring a certified copy of their birth certificate and record of immunizations to Middle School registration.

New Students

New students should present a certified copy of their birth certificate, a copy of immunizations records and Social Security number.  Please note that the hospital copy of the birth certificate is not official and cannot be accepted by the school.

Parents will need to sign a consent form to have their child’s school records transferred from the previous school.  Students new to the district are urged to visit their school building during regular office hours. Principals and their staff will be glad to give a tour of the building, assist with locker combinations, and answer any questions.  New students may also have a chance to meet some of the teachers who may be working in their classrooms in the days leading up to the opening of school.

Immunizations

All students need to have immunizations up to date in order to be admitted to school.  The school nurses will be on hand during registration and, if they have not already done so, all kindergarten parents should report during registration to present their student’s immunization record.

According to South Dakota law, minimum immunizations requirements for kindergarten through twelfth grade are:

  1. Four or more doses of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis-containing vaccine (DPT).  At least one dose must have been given on or after age 4.
  2. Three or more doses of poliovirus vaccine.  At least one dose must have been given on or after age 4.
  3. Two doses of measles/mumps/rubella virus (MMR) after the age of 12 months.
  4. Chickenpox (varicella) immunization or verification that the child has had the disease.
