The Milbank Firechiefs punched its ticket to the State Class B Amateur Baseball tournament with a 7-4 victory over Volga Thursday in district 1B play.

Milbank struggled early in the contest and fell behind 4-0 after four innings. The teams held each other scoreless for the next three innings until the Chiefs broke through the lull with six runs in the eighth. The inning was highlighted by Jesse Krause’s big three-RBI double, which bounced off the fence and allowed Milbank to take the lead. Milbank put the final nail in the coffin with a lone run in the ninth.

Krause led the local’s offense with two hits, including the double, and three RBIs. Lance Frogner belted out two hits and two runs while Matt Stephan added two hits and one run for Milbank. Taylor Boerger contributed one double hit, one run, two RBIs and a walk, and Travis Lester had one hit, one run and one RBI.

Also chipping in to the offensive push was Ronnie Krause, one hit and a walk; Brock Gomer, one run and a walk; Tyler Reil, one hit, one run and a walk, and Brady Krause, one hit.

Milbank finished the contest with seven runs on 11 hits and just one error. Boerger went the distance on the mound for the Chiefs to earn the win.

The state B tournament is schedule for August 5-16 in Mitchell.
