The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs suffered a 36-25 loss to Redfield-Doland in its home opener Thursday, December 17, at the Milbank Armory. Milbank Area dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs got out to a slow start and trailed 15-9 at the end of the opening quarter. Both teams struggled to make its shots fall and were unable to produce significant points in the second stanza. Milbank Area tallied just five points in the quarter and remained behind 22-14 at the midway mark.

The locals came to life in the third period and narrowly outscored the Lady Pheasants, but trailed 28-22 heading into the final period. Milbank Area suffered from cold shooting and were unable to control the tempo of the game. They added just three points while Redfield-Doland tallied eight points to secure the 36-25 victory.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed the entire game and shot just 23 percent from the field. Milbank Area went five for 21 in the first half and four for 19 in the second for a combined 9 for 40 for the contest.

Just five players found their way to the scorebook for the locals. Junior point guard Mackayla Schuelke led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points, three rebounds, one steal and one turnover on the night. She found the net twice from three-point-land. Center Caryssa Mielitz followed closely with eight points, three boards and two steals. Shelby Hooth tallied three points, six rebounds, three steals and three turnovers. Molly Rick contributed two points and one turnover. Mikayla Street added two points, two rebounds and two steals for the Lady Bulldogs.

Other players adding game statistics were Karlee Mertens, two rebounds and two turnovers, and Mikaela Hoeke, two turnovers.

Milbank Area finished the game with 24 rebounds, eight steals and 10 turnovers. Redfield-Doland collected the win with 30 rebounds, three steals, one assist and 14 turnovers. The Pheasants went 13 for 44 from the field for 38 percent shooting on the night.

Milbank Area travels to Willow Lake Monday, December 21, for a conference match up with Clark-Willow Lake before getting a short break over Christmas. The Lady Bulldogs will face Waubay-Summit in the second game of the State Farm-S&D One Stop Shootout Tuesday, December 29.

Junior Varsity and C team scores – The Milbank Area junior varsity team secured a 48-25 victory over Redfield-Doland while the C team slipped past the Pheasants 36-31.
