_DSC0006 (1)Milbank Area had a solid night of shooting to lift the Bulldogs to a 65-55 victory over the Tiospa Zina Wambdi Tuesday, January 19, at the Milbank Armory. The locals shot 53 percent from the field, hitting 19 of 41 attempts on the night. The Dawgs were also 19 for 19 from the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs got out to a slow start and looked sluggish as they fell behind early 7-0. Riley Wollschlager hit a big three-pointer midway through the quarter to give Milbank Area a spark. Nate Bien fired in a three at the buzzer to cut the Wambdi lead to 14-10.

Bien made two shots from the charity stripe early in the second quarter to pull to within two points, before Jacob Jackson found the bottom of the net from three-point land to push Milbank Area ahead 15-14. The teams stuck close and battled to take the advantage. Nolan Foss dropped in the put back at the buzzer to come to within one point at 26-27 at the midway mark.

The Bulldogs came out in the second half ready to roll. Despite several unforced turnovers, the Dawgs hit on all cylinders. Milbank Area was able to get the ball inside as well as find the hoop from three-point land. The locals controlled the rebounding on both ends and maintained its composure to overtake the lead at 42-39 heading into the final stanza. The Bulldogs produced 23 points in the final quarter, which led to the 65-55 victory. Milbank Area improved to 3-6 on the season.

“I really liked how the guys continued to battle even though we weren’t at our best,” noted head coach Matt Bastian. “I felt we did a decent job controlling their dribble penetration which led them to shoot contested jump shots. The obvious in this game is we will have to clean up some of the unforced turnovers we committed. I am happy for the guys to get this win. Now we need to do our best to build off of this.”

Three players scored in double figures to set the pace for the Bulldogs. Jonny Ash produced a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. He also had two assists, one steal and four turnovers. Ash was 8 for 8 from the free- throw line. Bien poured in 22 points, five rebounds, one assist and two turnovers. He went 10 for 10 from the charity stripe. Foss followed with 11 points, eight boards, two steals and two turnovers. Jacob Jackson tallied five points, two rebounds and two assists while Wollschlager had three points, one rebound and three turnovers.

Also contributing for the Bulldog win were Kyle Montag, six rebounds and one turnover; Tanner Gauer, two points, one assist and one steal, and Isaac Snaza, two rebounds and one turnover.

Milbank Area wrapped up the win with 41 rebounds, five steals, four assists and 17 turnovers.

Tiospa Zina made just 27 percent of its shots from the field, making 21 of 60 attempts. The Wambdi finished with 23 rebounds, 15 steals, two assists and five turnovers.

Milbank Area will be back in action Friday, January 22, on its home court as it hosts the Hamlin Chargers. The C game is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m.
