_DSC0006 (2)The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs struggled to keep pace with a quick Webster Area Bearcat team and suffered a 69-45 Northeast Conference girls basketball loss Thursday, February 11, on the road. The locals dropped to 5-12 on the season.

Milbank Area came out ready to play and stuck close to Webster Area in the opening quarter. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by two points at 17-15. The opponent widened the gap to 10 points at 36-26 at the halfway mark.

Milbank Area struggled in the third quarter while Webster Area took advantage of the local’s lack of readiness. The Lady Bulldogs produced just two points in the third quarter while the Bearcats fired in 20 points to spread the margin to 56-28 heading into the final stanza. Milbank Area outscored Webster Area 17-13 in the final period, but it was just too late to overcome the large third quarter point spread.

“We came out and played a good first half,” noted Milbank Area head coach Joe Frederiksen. “We came out of the locker room in the third quarter not ready to play and lost all momentum.”

Caryssa Mielitz led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points and six rebounds. Mikaela Hoeke followed with seven points and one rebound. Molly Rick tallied six points, four boards and one turnover while Sophia Seffrood added six points, one rebound, one steal and one turnover. Mikaela Street chipped in with four points, four rebounds, one assist and one turnover. Cara Berkner dropped in three points, three rebounds, one assist and one turnover, and Karlee Mertens tallied two points, two rebounds and two turnovers on the night.
Also contributing to the totals for Milbank Area were Shelby Hooth, one assist, one steal and three turnovers; LaChasity Finley, one steal and one turnover, and Shea Hooth, one steal and one turnover.

The Lady Bulldogs made 40 percent of its shots from the field, hitting 17 of 43 attempts. They finished the contest with 27 rebounds, five steals, three assists and 14 turnovers.
Webster Area went 27 for 50 from the field for 54 percent shooting on the night. The Bearcats secured the win with 28 rebounds, 10 steals and eight turnovers.

Milbank Area has one more week remaining in the regular season and will be busy with three games. The Lady Bulldogs will host Madison Monday, February 15, before traveling to Ortonville, MN, for double header action Tuesday, February 16. The team will finish out its regular season schedule with a home game against Deuel Thursday, February 18.
