_DSC0024 (1)The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs worked hard but came up on the short end of the stick in a high school girls basketball matchup between two Bulldog teams. The locals suffered a 50-41 loss to Madison Monday, February 15, and drop to 5-13 on the season.

Milbank Area got out to a slow start and trailed 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. The local team produced just four points in the second period to fall behind 25-10 at the midway mark. Milbank Area battled in the third, but continued to trail 41-20 heading into the final stanza. They poured in 21 points in the final quarter, but could not overcome the early deficit.

“We didn’t get the start we wanted,” noted Milbank Area head coach Joe Frederiksen. “We had a hard time getting our shots to fall in the first half.”
Molly Rick led the locals with 13 points and four rebounds. Mikayla Street tallied seven points and one rebound. Karlee Mertens chipped in with five points while Caryssa Mielitz added five points, 13 rebounds and two steals in the contest. Shelby Hooth contributed four points and three rebounds.
Also adding to the team totals for Milbank Area were LaChasity Finley, three points and two steals; Sophia Seffrood and Shea Hooth, two points each, and Cara Berkner and Mikaela Hoeke, one rebound apiece.

Milbank Area went 14 for 36 from the field for 39 percent shooting on the night. The locals were 4-for-17 in the first half and 10-19 in the second. Milbank Area finished the game with 28 rebounds, five steals and 16 turnovers.
Madison made 40 percent of its shots from the field, hitting 16 of 40 attempts. The opponent won the contest with 22 rebounds, six steals and 11 turnovers.

Milbank Area will travel to Ortonville, MN, Tuesday, February 16, and will wrap up its regular season with a final home game Thursday, February 18.

Junior Varsity and C Team – The Milbank Area junior varsity team split in its recent contests. The young Lady Bulldogs downed Webster Area 41-25 before falling to Madison 51-40. The Milbank Area C team secured a 48-37 victory over Madison.
