_DSC0001 (19)Four students from MHS will attend the 74th session of the South Dakota American Legion Boys State May 30 through June 3 on the campus of Northern State University in Aberdeen. American Legion Post 9 in Milbank selected Kaleb DeBoer, William Mischel, and Connor Lightfield. Kadon Leddy was selected by Stockholm-Strandburg Post 171.

The purpose of the American Legion Boys State of South Dakota is to better help youth understand and appreciate the American system of government, including the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and to foster a better knowledge of the fundamental principles of government. The citizens of Boys State create and operate a mythical 51st state comprised of city, county, and state government.

_DSC0011 (1)Taking part in the 70th annual American Legion Auxiliary South Dakota Girls State are MHS students Macie Redmond, Brooke Fraasch, and Korinne Roggenbuck along with OHS student Hanna Strei. Fraasch and Strei are sponsored by the Big Stone City American Legion Auxiliary and Roggenbuck and Redmond are sponsored by the Milbank American Legion Auxiliary.

Girls State runs from May 30 through June 4 on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Girls State is a citizenship program for young women that strives to provide training in citizenship and government and is promoted as a laboratory of political science.
