Donnie HilerDonald “Donnie” Hiler, age 69, of Milbank, SD, died on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank with Rev. Penny Tower officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the time of service at the funeral home.

Honorary bearers include Donnie’s nieces and nephews: Tracy, Lindsey, Darin, Corey, and Jeffrey.

Donald “Donnie” William Hiler was born on October 22, 1946, in Cincinnati, OH to Harley and Verna (Tulowetzke) Hiler. He attended school in Cincinnati. Donnie was baptized on April 21, 1957 at Georgetown Christian Church.

Donnie served with the United States Army 673rd Medical Detachment from June 1964 until May 1967. He later served with the United States Army 1st Squadron, 3rd ACR from June 1973 until January 1975. During his two tours in Vietnam, Donnie earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Marksman (Rifle M-14). After his honorable discharge, Donnie spent time traveling and working various jobs across the United States.

Donnie enjoyed reading the Bible and sharing his love for God with others. He also took pleasure in fishing, fast cars, watching baseball games to cheer on the Cincinnati Reds, listening to music, and playing with his cat, Sox. On April 26, 2014, Donnie was united in marriage with Effie Slominski in Milbank, SD.

Left to cherish Donnie’s memory is his wife, Effie of Milbank, SD; sister, Marcie Veen of Sioux Falls, SD; two nieces; three nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; mother-in-law, Josephine Slominski of Watertown, SD; and sisters-in-law, Reena Slominski, Minta Auten, and Linda Slominski.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Larry.
