_dsc0006-9The Milbank Area Lady Bulldogs captured second place at the Eastern Volleyball Classic September 24, at the Milbank Armory. The locals won their first two matches and then fell to Dakota Valley in the championship. The Lady Bulldogs hold a 10-4 season record.

Milbank Area faced Tri-Valley in the opening match of the tournament and came away with a 2-1 victory. They won the first set 25-18 and lost the second 25-14. The Lady Bulldogs pulled together and came back to win 25-9 and secure the match victory.

In semi-final action, Milbank Area slipped past Tea Area 2-0 with set wins of 25-19 and 25-23. In the other semi-final match, Dakota Valley edged out Elk Point-Jefferson 2-1 with scores of 18-25, 25-17, and 25-14. This pitted Dakota Valley against the Lady Bulldogs for the championship.

Milbank Area struggled to get things going in the championship tilt. Dakota Valley won both sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-17 to take the title.

Caryssa Mielitz led the Lady Bulldogs with 36 kills, 26 digs, and one ace. Molly Rick followed with 18 kills, 24 digs, and three aces. Mikaela Hoeke added eight kills, 24 digs, 52 assists, and four aces. Mackayla Schuelke contributed 12 assists, three aces, and 22 digs and Jaecy Engebretson had six kills, eight digs, two blocks, and two aces.

Also adding to the totals for Milbank Area were Madi Schulte and Maty Lightfield with 15 digs each. Jaden Hoeke contributed three kills, four assists, four digs, and one block. Gabbi Cummins had six kills, four digs, two assists, and one block and Mady Hilbrands and LaChasity Finley made two kills each.

Other scores throughout the tournament were:
First round – Tea Area over Winner 2-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-17); Dakota Valley over Sisseton 2-0 (25-11, 25-8); Elk Point-Jefferson over Chamberlain 2-0 (25-19, 25-6).
Consolation semi-finals – Tri-Valley over Winner 2-1 (28-26, 17-25, 25-21) and Chamberlain over Sisseton, 2-0 (25-22, 25-20).
Seventh place match – Sisseton over Winner 2-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19).
Fifth place match – Tri-Valley over Chamberlain 2-0 (25-15, 25-23).
Third place match – Elk Point-Jefferson over Tea Area 2-1 (25-18, 16-25, 25-18).

Milbank Area will host Hamlin Thursday, September 29, on its home court at the Milbank Armory.
