Milbank Area hosted Redfield-Doland Friday, February 3, at the Milbank Armory and came away with a 67-56 Northeast Conference basketball victory. The Bulldogs then traveled to Sioux Falls Saturday, February 4, to battle Corsica-Stickney in the third game of the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Classic. Milbank Area fell 67-30.

Friday night, Milbank Area got out to a solid start and led Redfield-Doland 14-5 at the end of the opening quarter. The Bulldogs continued to control the game and extended their lead to 36-18 at the midway mark. The Pheasants came back to outscore the Bulldogs in the final two quarters, but Milbank Area held on for the 67-56 win.

Four players scored in double figures for the Dawgs. Jonny Ash fired in 20 points and had 1 assist, and 1 steal. Nate Bien followed with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Mitch Quade and James Weber tallied 10 points each. Quade had 3 rebounds and 2 assists and Weber added 6 rebounds and 1 assist.

Also scoring for Milbank Area were: Derrick Aho, 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal; Riley Wollschlager, 3 points, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. Jake Fox had 1 point and 3 boards. Matt Lenards had 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Preston Morton snagged 1 rebound and 1 steal.

Milbank Area went 24-of-48 from the field for 50 percent shooting. The Bulldogs counted 34 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals. They had 12 turnovers.
Redfield-Doland made 33 percent of its shots from the field – 18 of 54 attempts. The Pheasants finished the game with 31 rebounds, 10 steals, and 3 assists. They committed seven turnovers.

The Bulldogs faced Corsica-Stickney during the Sanford Pentagon Classic Saturday night in Sioux Falls. The Dawgs trailed 15-12 after one quarter of play. Milbank Area scored just eight points in the second period to fall behind at 31-20 at the midway mark. In the second half, the Bulldogs added just 10 points to their total – six in the third quarter and four in the fourth. Corsica-Stickney dumped in 20 points in the third and 16 in the fourth to take the win at 67-30.

“We had a tough time keeping things going on offense,” stated Bulldog Head Coach Matt Bastian. “Early in the game, I thought we played pretty well, but as the game went on, we got tired. I thought it was pretty evident we didn’t have our legs throughout the game as a lot of our shots came up short. Corsica-Stickney has a very good team and it showed in this game.”

Bien led the Bulldogs with 7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Weber followed with 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Quade tallied 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal. Lenards added 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Cody Dockter chipped in 4 points and 3 rebounds.

Also contributing to the totals for the Dawgs were Jonny Ash, two points, one rebound, and one steal; Jake Fox, two points; Jordan Riley, two points; Derrick Aho, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals; and Preston Morton, one rebound.

Milbank Area went 12 of 53 from the field for 23 percent shooting. The Bulldogs had 24 rebounds, 15 steals, and 5 assists. They had 10 turnovers.
Corsica-Stickney made 56 percent of its shots from the field. They hit 25 of 45 attempts. They won the game with 42 rebounds, 10 steals, 7 assists, and 1 blocked shot. They committed 15 turnovers.
