The Milbank High School wrestling team wrapped up its season with an awards potluck March 13. Individual award winners were chosen by vote from their teammates. Senior Jake Anderson was named the Most Valuable Wrestler. He ended his high school wrestling career with 129 wins and became a member of the MHS 100-Win Club. Anderson qualified for the State Class A tournament his final two seasons and finished in seventh place in 2016. He was also named to the 2017 Academic All-State Team for his accomplishments in the classroom.
Eli Fischer was selected as the Most Improved Wrestler this season and JD Lusk was chosen as the Rookie of the Year. Both were state meet qualifiers. Fischer led the team with a fifth place state finish at the 106-pound weight class.
Alec Bien received the Pinner Award for collecting the most pins this season – 18. Bien also qualified for the state meet the last two seasons. Senior Tyler Krause won the Justin Maass Spirit Award for his dedication and enthusiasm and senior Jose Chen was given the Coach’s Award. Freshman Jordan Lindberg was named Most Valuable Wrestler on the junior varsity squad.
Ben Nelson and Hallie Van Sambeek were also named to the 2017 Academic All-State team. The award is sponsored by the South Dakota Wrestling Coaches Association and is presented to seniors who have participated in the sport for three years or longer and have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
Certificates were given to each letter winner. Recipients were: statisticians- Hallie Van Sambeek, Lindsey Geyer, and Devon Balling; seventh-grader Kaden Krause; eighth-graders Lars Anderson, Riley Przybycien, Toby Schneck, and Thomas Steltz; freshman Zippy Bock, Angel Chen, Alex Farrell, Eli Fischer, Elijah Fraasch, Brodie Holtquist, Tommy Holtquist, Jordan Lindberg, JD Lusk, and Breyden Miller; sophomore Alec Bien; junior Cole Dockter; and seniors Jake Anderson, Jose Chen, Riley Folk, Tyler Krause, Taran Mogard, and Ben Nelson.
