Frieda Wellnitz, age 90, of Milbank, SD, died May 23, 2017 at the Milbank Care and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Bill Cornelius will officiate. Burial will be held in the Milbank City Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Mundwiler Funeral Home on Monday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be her grandsons: Eric Wellnitz, Cory Wellnitz, Joshua Wellnitz, Jonathan Wellnitz, Stephen Wellnitz, Patrick Wellnitz, and Joseph Mettler. Honorary bearers will be the caregivers at Milbank Care and Rehab Center.

Frieda G. (Schwarze) Wellnitz was born December 23, 1926, in Grant County, SD. She was the daughter of Arthur and Elfrieda (Pinkert) Schwarze. She was baptized on January 16, 1927 and confirmed on July 6, 1941 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alban Township, Grant County, South Dakota. Frieda attended rural school at Alban #1, and graduated from Ortonville High School. She was united in marriage with Leo Wellnitz on September 7, 1947.

Frieda and Leo lived and farmed in Melrose Township, Grant County. Frieda enjoyed many hobbies such as cooking, sewing, playing puzzles and making cards. Her ceramics, especially a nativity scene she made, are cherished by her family. She also enjoyed outdoor activities, including traveling, camping, fishing and gardening, especially roses.

In her later years, Frieda volunteered at the local thrift store. She remained very organized and diligent in her bible study. She was a faithful member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted grandmother.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Craig (Becky) Wellnitz of Milbank, SD; Renae Mettler of Aberdeen, SD; and Keith (Patsy) Wellnitz of Rothsay, MN; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; son, Brian; three brothers: Paul, Elmer, and Alvin; two sisters: Ruth and Emma; son-in-law, Larry Mettler.
