Four golfers from the Milbank High School girls golf team punched their tickets to the State Class A meet during the Region 1A meet in Volga on Thursday, May 25. Kylie Kasuske, Tori Quade, Alaina Rausch, and Clare Van Dover earned a trip to Hartford to compete in the state tournament June 5.
“First off, I am extremely proud of all the girls for hanging in there and competing for all 18 holes,” said Bulldog Head Coach Mark Keeton. “It was a challenging day with wind gusts of 30 miles per hour. Keeping the ball in play was not easy, and Meadow Creek’s large greens were tough to navigate in the high winds. The girls did a great job taking the good with the bad and battling to the end. As well as the meet went, it is a little tough to take as we were only eight strokes out of third place. But, I am looking forward to taking the four qualifiers to state and seeing what we can do.”
Milbank finished fifth with a score of 431. Madison was crowned the Region 1A Champion at 377, and Sisseton was the runner-up at 381. McCook Central-Montrose finished third at 423. The top three teams advance to the state tournament. Rounding out the field was Dell Rapids, 433, and Sioux Valley, 488.
Kasuske led the Bulldogs with an 18-hole round of 104. She placed 13th individually. Quade carded a 105 and captured 15th place. Rausch landed in 17th place with a 108. Van Dover took 22nd place with a 114. Also competing at the region meet for Milbank was Mikaela Hoeke. She hit a 119.
Despite not placing in the top three as a team, Milbank is still eligible to compete for the state title because they have four individuals advancing to the event. The South Dakota Class A Golf Tornament is Monday and Tuesday, June 5-6, in Hartford.
State qualifiers include: (back l. to r.) Tori Quade, Coach Mark Keeton, and Alaina Rausch. Front row: Clare Van Dover and Kylie Kasuske.
