The Milbank Area Lions Swim Team kicked off its season with their lone home meet Friday and Saturday, May 26-27, at Unity Square.

Fifty-four local swimmers posted high marks, cut time, earned South Dakota state qualifying times and broke team records during the meet. “It’s always great to work the nerves out at our own facility where the kids are used to swimming, especially the new ones,” stated MALST head coach Jodi Street. “All 54 swimmers did very well. We had 10 athletes swim 31 state qualifying events. That is huge for a first meet.”

Those athletes who earned state qualifying times included Aubrey Fraasch (200 IM, 50 back, 100 breast, 50 breast), Liam Street (100 IM, 100 free, 50 free, 25 free, 50 breast, 50 back), Jacob Overby (100 free, 25 free), Maurina Street (200 IM, 50 back), Carter Gloe (100 free, 50 back, 100 back, 50 free), Rachel Schulte (50 back), Elijah Fraasch (50 free), Brooke Fraasch (200 IM, 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 50 free), Amaya Street (100 free, 50 free) and Presley Peschong (200 IM, 100 back, 50 free, 100 fly),

Seven MALST team records were broken throughout the two-day event. Liam Street broke Adam Thomas’ 8 and under breaststroke record, which was set in 2008. Carter Gloe broke records in the boys 9-10 year old 50 free, 50 back, 100 free and 100 back, which were 12-year-old records previously set by Ben Forrette and Austin Berens. Amaya Street broke Kylie Poel’s 12-year-old record in both the girls 13-14 50 and 100 free races. “I was very pleased with all the swimmer’s performances and times,” said Coach Street. “It was a great start to our season and the crowd and team spirit was incredible.”

Four senior swimmers were recognized Friday evening for their time and dedication they have put into being part of the MALST family. Clare Van Dover, Presley Peschong and Brooke Fraasch were given a gift from a younger swimmer representing the team and coaches. Kerissa DeBoer is also a senior swimmer, but was unable to attend the meet. “We wish them all the best as they continue on with their future plans,” expressed Coach Street.

Four athletes were chosen as the swimmers of the meet. “This was a difficult choice as so many swimmers deserved this recognition,” added Coach Street.

Avigail Howard is six years old and new to MALST this season. She placed first in all three of her events. Carter Gloe came away with four broken records, four state qualifying events and cut the most time in one single event. Jenna Dexter had the biggest time cut overall for the meet.

Brooke Fraasch swam personal best times in multiple events for her last meet of her swimming career. “Brooke had an emotional and extraordinary meet,” said Coach Street. “This was the only meet she will swim this season as she will leave for the US Naval Academy in June. She couldn’t have ended her swimming career on a higher level. If you ask anyone who attended, I am sure they are still talking about her 100 fly race against her brother.”

MALST will attend the Watertown Invitational meet Saturday, June 3, at the Prairie Lakes Wellness Center.
