The Milbank VFW 13-14 Junior Teener baseball team has started out their season on a solid note.

The locals finished in fourth place out of 10 teams at their opening tournament in Brandon May 26-27. “It was a great first weekend out of the shoot,” expressed coach Scott Hoeke. “The kids played well.” Hoeke is being assisted by Jesse Krause.

Milbank started out the tournament with a close 4-3 loss to Spencer, IA. Isaac Schulte took the loss on the pitching mound for the locals. Bennett Schwenn, Kaden Krause and Micah Dietmeier each scored one run for Milbank in the contest.

Milbank came back and earned a big 12-4 victory over Haywarden, IA. Schwenn and Krause scored a run in the first two innings, and Matthew Christianson added one in the second to put Milbank ahead 5-0. Parker Schell and Christianson scored in the third to extend the advantage to 7-0.

The opponent answered with three runs in the fourth, but Milbank retaliated with five runs in the fifth. Contributing to the run streak was Schwenn, Krause, Dietmeier, Mike Karges and Cole Swenson. Swenson also secured the pitching win for Milbank.

In the final game of the tournament, Milbank was edged out 9-8 by the host team, Brandon Valley. Karges led Milbank with three runs. Krause followed closely with two runs while Schwenn and Schell tallied one apiece.

Milbank picked up a pair of wins over Webster in doubleheader baseball action Monday, June 5. The locals won 7-3 in the first game and 11-5 in the second. In the two games combined, Isaac Schulte led the team with four runs. Kellen Hoeke notched three runs while Krause, Karges, Dietmeier, Schell, Christianson, Stevie Ash, Evan Erickson, Aiden Rabe and Connor Bender each brought in one run for Milbank.

Schulte collected the pitching win in the opening game, and Swenson got the win in the second game. Hoeke tallied the save.

Milbank will take part in the Watertown tournament this weekend, Friday through Sunday, June 9-11.
