Joann Fay Ahartz, formerly of Milbank, died on June 10, 2017, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Fr. Gary DeRouchey will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, June 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Burial will be in the St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, at the Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren: Camille, Adelynn, Jack, and Lailah Ahartz.

Joann Fay Ahartz was born on November 13, 1944, in Milbank, SD. Joann was the daughter of Martin and Fay (Marker) Boogaard, and she graduated from Milbank High School. She was united in marriage with Frank Ahartz on September 5, 1964, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank.

Joann’s calling was to be a caregiver. From babysitting in her earlier years to working in the healthcare field, she enjoyed caring for others. She worked at St. Bernard’s Hospital in Milbank for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

She later moved to Sioux Falls and continued her healthcare career as a Certified Nursing Assistant and office professional at Sioux Valley Hospital. After retiring, Joann enjoyed spending time with her friends she previously worked with. Joann was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Joann is survived by her two sons: Shannon (Laura) Ahartz of Henderson, NV, and Trevor (Amber) Ahartz of Des Moines, IA; one sister, Marie Bohlen of Milbank, SD; two brothers: Francis Boogaard of Watertown, SD, and James Boogaard of Milbank, SD; and four grandchildren: Camille, Adelynn, Jack and Lailah Ahartz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank, on June 28, 2013; and three brothers: Don Boogaard, Bill Boogaard, and Morris Strain.
