Jake Adams, Iowa Hawkeye home run record holder, All-American, and Golden Spikes Award semi-finalist, is headed to the big leagues. Adams, the son of Milbank natives Bob and Laurie (Unzen) Adams, was selected by the Houston Astros in the sixth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound first baseman was the 181st pick in this year’s draft. He will forgo his senior season at Iowa.

“It’s so exciting,” said his mother, Laurie. “When he was drafted, it was nerve wracking just waiting from noon until 2:30 p.m till he got the call from Houston. Two minutes later, they announced his name on TV.”

“I’m very excited to make it to the next level, but I have a lot of hard work ahead of me,” Jake said. He departed for Florida Sunday, June 18, to sign papers and complete a physical before flying out to New York where he will play until September with the Tri-City Valley Cats of Troy, New York.
