The Milbank VFW Junior Teener baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a 14-10 overall record following three recent matchups.
The locals suffered a 5-1 loss to Ortonville Friday, July 7, in a road contest. Milbank got on the scoreboard first by plating one run in the opening inning on an Ortonville error. The opponent answered with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 4-1. Ortonville put the nail in the coffin with a final run in the sixth.

Evan Erickson and Connor Bender led the way for Milbank with one hit each. Milbank collected just two hits in the contest. Micah Dietmeier took the loss on the mound for the Junior Teeners. He struck out eight batters, but gave up four runs, three hits and five walks on the night. Kaden Krause finished the game with two strikeouts. He allowed one run and one walk.

Milbank traveled to Madison Monday, July 10, and split games in the doubleheader. Milbank rolled to a 19-5 victory over the Madison 13’s before falling in a close contest, 6-5, to the Madison 14’s.

The Junior Teeners started out hot and plated six runs in the opening inning. Mike Karges singled on a 2-1 count to spark the drive. Milbank closed out the win with seven runs in the seventh inning. The surge was led by singles by Isaac Schulte and Kellen Hoeke, a double by Micah Dietmeier and two Madison errors.

Milbank scored its 19 runs on 15 hits. Karges led the team with three hits and three runs. Krause, Bennett Schwenn and Schulte had two hits and three runs each while Hoeke added two hits and two runs. Adding to the totals were Dietmeier, one hit; Karson Weber, one run; Evan Erickson and Cole Swenson, one hit and one run apiece and Parker Schell, one hit and two runs.

Schulte earned the win on the mound for Milbank. He struck out six batters and gave up five hits, five runs and three walks. Karges finished the game with five strike outs and allowed two walks.

Milbank came from behind, but came up short in a 6-5 loss in the second game of the day to the Madison 14’s. Madison led 4-2 after two innings and 6-3 after five innings of play. The locals scored three runs at the end of the game, but were still just one run short of a win.

The Junior Teeners belted out six hits in the game. Hoeke led the surge with three hits, and Dietmeier, Karges and Schulte added one each.
Dietmeier took the pitching loss for Milbank. He struck out seven batters and gave up five runs, one hit and five walks. Swenson finished the game with three strikeouts, one hit, one run and two walks.

Milbank will take part in the region tournament July 11-14 in Dell Rapids. Milbank will then host the State 13-14 VFW baseball tournament at Legion Field July 21-23. Milbank receives an automatic bid to the state tourney as the host team.
