The Milbank VFW 13-14 Junior Teener baseball team finished out its season with a 15-11 overall record, and were eliminated from the northeast region tournament Wednesday, July 12.

Despite being eliminated from the region tournament, the locals receive an automatic birth into the State 13-14 VFW tournament which will take place July 21-23 at Legion Field in Milbank. In the state tournament, Milbank will face W-I-N (Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern) in the final game on Friday, July 21, at approximately 8 p.m.

Milbank fell 12-11 in a very tight game with Volga which eliminated them from the tournament. After being tied 1-1 after two innings, the locals scored eight runs in the third inning to go ahead 9-1. The surge was led by Micah Dietmeier with two doubles, singles by Kaden Krause and Bennett Schwenn, a walk by Cole Swenson and a Volga error.

The teams each added a lone run in the fourth to move Milbank’s advantage to 10-2. Volga plated another run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth inning which cut the deficit to 10-5. The Junior Teeners felt their lead was secure, but added a single run in the seventh. Volga answered with seven big runs in the inning to snatch the victory away from Milbank at 12-11.

Milbank scored its 11 runs on 12 hits in the game. Schwenn, Dietmeier and Evan Erickson led the team with three hits each. Krause followed with two hits and three runs, and Isaac Schulte added one hit and one run for Milbank.

Mike Karges took the pitching loss for Milbank. He gave up one run, two hits and one walk. Krause started on the mound and struck out three batters while allowing two runs, four hits and one walk.

Milbank cruised past Sisseton 10-1 in its third game of the tournament Tuesday, July 11. The Junior Teeners scored two runs in the second inning on a single by Kellen Hoeke and one by Karson Weber to go ahead 2-1.

The locals used a big fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Milbank plated six runs with singles by Schwenn and Hoeke and a double by Schulte to move ahead 8-1. The team then finished off the game with two runs in the seventh.

Milbank scored 10 runs on 13 hits. Krause, Dietmeier, Karges, Schulte and Hoeke contributed two hits each while Schwenn, Weber and Parker Schell had one each.

Schell went the distance on the mound for the locals to collect the pitching victory. He struck out nine batters and gave up one run, four hits and three walks.

In the first two games of the tournament, Milbank downed the Madison 13’s 19-5 before falling to the Madison 14’s 6-5.
