MHS alumnus JP Lindquist captured the men’s 3.5 singles title at the Asfora/Clayton South Dakota Adult Open. The tennis tournament was held in Sioux Falls from July 21-23.

In the opening round, Lindquist downed Buysse from Brookings, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. In semi-final action, he secured a 6-1 6-3 victory over Staiger from Madison. In the finals match, Lindquist fell behind, but fought his way back to victory 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Lindquist also teamed up with Greg Cantine of Milbank in the 8.0 doubles division. In their opening match, the duo defeated a Sioux Falls team 7-5, 6-0, but suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 loss to another Sioux Falls team in the semi-finals.

Kevin Cantine and Jeff Kurtz paired up in the 8.0 and 45 doubles. In the 8.0 doubles, they fell 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to a Sioux Falls team. They also lost 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 to a second Sioux Falls team. In the 45 doubles, K. Cantine and Kurtz went 2-1. They fell 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round and 6-1, 6-2 in round two. The pair came back to win their final match 6-0, 6-0.

Alex Cantine and Ryan Schreurs competed in the 8.0 doubles. They lost 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 (5) and 6-7 (4), 7-5, 10-8.

Alex also took part in the 4.0 singles division. He went 1-2. In his first match, he fell 6-1, 6-2 to DeBoer of Sioux Falls. He then lost 8-4 to Wadsworth of Sioux Falls. In his final match, he downed Blackhawk from Nebraska, 1-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Schreurs competed in the 3.5 singles division. He fell 6-0, 6-0 to Brown of Sioux Falls, and 7-6 (3), 1-6, 10-7 to Taylor of Nebraska.

Over 130 players competed in the tournament. A majority were from South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, and North Dakota. Players from as far away as Illinois, Washington, Florida, Kentucky, Arizona, and California also competed.
