The MHS girls cross country team repeated as Northeast Conference champions October 5, in Webster. The Lady Bulldogs claimed their second consecutive NEC title with 22 points to top the field of seven teams. The boys team finished as the NEC runners-up; they were edged out by one point by Webster Area.

“Both teams ran outstanding,” stated Bulldog Cross Country Coach Eric Townsend. “This was definitely our best meet of the season. Both teams ran much better than than they did in Sisseton the week before. We knew coming into the meet both teams would be in a position to make a run for the team titles.”

Four runners for Milbank placed in the top eight in the girls varsity race. Maurina Street led the team in third place. Danica Schulte finished fifth, Taylor Thue came in sixth, and Amaya Street took eighth place. “To have four girls place in the top eight is outstanding,” said Townsend.

In the boys division, four runners placed in the top 11, and five were in the top 20. Nick Batchelor led the Dawgs with third place. Luke Wold captured sixth place, Alex Farrell took eighth, Zippy Bock placed 11th, and Ben Harstad, 18th.

The Bulldogs compete in the Region 1A meet in Webster on Thursday, October 12, for the chance to advance to the State Class A meet. “Going into next week, both teams are in a great position to qualify for the state meet,” Townsend said. “The key will be making sure we stay as healthy as possible.”
