Sylvia Rasmussen

Sylvia Rasmussen, age 91, a long time Ortonville resident died on November 2, 2017, at the Appleton Municipal Nursing Home in Appleton, MN.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 6, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ in Ortonville. Pastor Lynn Thomas will officiate and burial will be in Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. Casket bearers will be: DuWayne Suckow, Mark Brustuen, David Thompson, Tom Nelson, Kyle Brustuen and Brian Brustuen.

Sylvia Ida Galow was born to William and Minnie Galow on July 6, 1926, on the family farm in Big Stone County. She was baptized on August 9, 1926, and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Correll, MN on June 16, 1940. Growing up during the Great Depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s, life was very hard. Sylvia attended country school for eight years, from 1932 until 1940. At the age of 14, Sylvia left home with her older sister, Mable, to find work. They went to Ortonville and Sylvia found work in numerous restaurants. She made Ortonville her lifetime home.

On December 4, 1965, Sylvia was united in marriage with LeRoy (Cubby) Rasmussen, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton, MN. In 1967, they both joined First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ortonville, and were lifetime members.

Sylvia and Cubby lived in a small home in Ortonville and enjoyed their time together with various hobbies and gardening. Cubby passed away on January 8, 1982. Sylvia remained in Ortonville and worked until she retired in 1986.

Sylvia loved to play cards and was a member of a card club for many years. She enjoyed bus trips with the club to various casinos. Sylvia adored her family and loved spending time with her nieces, nephews, and their families. Holidays and birthdays were always enjoyed together.
Left to cherish her memory are two sisters: Alvina Galow Phipps of Candy, OR; and Joyce (DuWayne) Suckow of Appleton, MN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents: William and Minnie; her husband, LeRoy; two sisters: Elda and Mable; and one brother, Lyle.
