The Milbank Area Lions Swim Team swimmers kicked off their first winter season at the Brookings Invitational meet November 10-12. “The competition was good for us to see where we were sitting with other teams,” stated Coach Jodi Street.

Milbank competed against seven other year-round teams including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Huron, Aberdeen, Watertown and the Southwest Swim Team from Minnesota. “The swimmers did amazing for our first meet,” Street said. “It turned out to be a great start for us with all six swimmers posting personal best times in multiple events.”

In the final event of the weekend, the 500 freestyle, Milbank had three swimmers take on the distance event and placed in the top five. Amaya Street took first place while Savanna Osowski and Max Kuecker finished fifth. “I was very pleased to see them swim that well at the end of the meet,” Street added. “They set a good pace and were able to carry through to the end.”

Street and Kuecker both qualified for the State A meet in multiple events. Street was eight state qualifying swims in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle and the 200 back, 200 breast, 200 IM and 100 breast. Kuecker punched his ticket to state in seven events including the 50, 100, 200 and 500 free, 200 back, 100 fly and 200 IM.

William Karels was the top timecutter with a 14.54 second drop in his 100 fly. “It was great to see Will come out and drop that much time,” Coach Street mentioned.

The winter season is a new program for Milbank. The Sealions will compete in the Watertown Invitational on December 9.
