Carlyle Trygstad, age 90, of Milbank died January 31, 2018, at Milbank Area Hospital – Avera Health, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m. at Living Word Lutheran Church in Milbank. Rev. Kent Groethe will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be at church one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers will be Alex Trygstad, Nels Trygstad, David Herb, Mick Redmond, Eric Herb, Tom Hoeke, and Marlin Hofer. Honorary bearers will the Living Word Church Family, Lenny Haliburton, and Jim Christenson.

Carlyle Elwood Trygstad was born on May 2, 1927, at Lily, South Dakota. He was the son of Nels and Marie (Nelson) Trygstad. He grew up in Lily and graduated high school there. Carlyle joined the United States Navy during his senior year of high school, on March 14, 1945. He served until August 18, 1946, then rejoined the Navy on September 9, 1946. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1948.

Carlyle returned to South Dakota. He began is career with Best Motors in Webster, SD. He was united in marriage with Lorna Holmstrom on June 11, 1950. Carlyle transferred to Huron, SD in 1981, and settled in Milbank in 1988. He retired after 50 years working as Ford Parts Manager. Lorna died on August 29, 1997.

Carlyle was united in marriage with Eunice (Otto) Jackson on December 18, 1999. Together their families blended and they were blessed with 18 years of marriage. Carlyle was a faithful member of Living Word Lutheran Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post #0040 in Webster, and a member of the Lions Club. He enjoyed woodworking and sharing that talent with his grandchildren. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Fix-it.”

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Eunice of Milbank, SD; his children: John (Ruth) Trygstad of Salt Lake City, UT; Ann (Will) Cadreau of Houston, TX; Carol Herb of Houghton Lake, MI; and Laura Bult of Huron, SD; step-children: Lyle Hofer of Maple Valley, WA; Larry (Ling) Hofer of Germany; Steve (Marlene) Hofer of Bothell, WA; and Marlin (Shelly) Hofer of Henderson, NV; grandchildren: Nels (Jessica) Trygstad, Lars Trygstad, Alex Trygstad, Deanna (Kelly) Cadreau Maloney, Julie Cadreau, David (Sarah) Herb, Eric (Amanda) Herb, Meghan (Daniel) Nieder, Kelly Bult, Kyle Bult; 14 step-grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Carlyle was preceded in death by his parents: Nels and Marie; siblings: Garnet Kjosa, George Trygstad, Walter Trygstad; his wife, Lorna; son-in-law, Daniel Herb; and infant grandson, David William Cadreau.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Living Word Lutheran Church, Parkinson Foundation, or Milbank Area Hospital – Avera Health.
