Should you plan to take your boat or your ice shack to the fishing opener? District conservation officer supervior of Game, Fish, and Parks,... Pekelder Predicts Ice Out

Should you plan to take your boat or your ice shack to the fishing opener? District conservation officer supervior of Game, Fish, and Parks, Jamie Pekelder, predicts the ice will remain on Big Stone Lake another two weeks.

Pekelder says his office determines the Ice Out as being able to run a boat from one end of the lake to the other. It doesn’t mean all the ice is gone. The earliest Ice Out on record on Big Stone Lake is March 18, which happened twice – once in 1987 and once in 2012. The latest Ice Out catalogued was May 8, in 2013. It was also the only May date ever recorded.

During the 66 years the Game and Fish Department has documented the date, in 54 of those years the ice was gone in April. Seven times the Ice Out happened on April 1, and that’s no foolin’!
