MALST competed in the first long course meet of the season at Brookings High Point Meet, June 8-10. “They had some rainy conditions on day two but the swimmers handled it well and ended the meet with great success,” stated head coach Jodi Street.

Maurina Street was the top high point winner, bringing home the 3rd place trophy with 61 points. Other swimmers with high point rankings were: Logan Dexter – 4th place (18 points), Lincoln Holscher – 5th place(16 points), Carter Gloe – 4th place (53 points), Liam Street – 5th place (34 points) and Amaya Street – 4th place(55 points).

8 Swimmers captured 36 state qualifying swims. Those new to the state roster are Maddox Hanson (50 freestyle), Grant VanPeursem (50 & 100 backstroke), William Karels (50 freestyle) and Jessica VanPeursem (200 butterfly). Carter Gloe, Liam Street, Maurina Street and Amaya Street all added multiple events to their state ticket.

There were many swimmers who swam distance events at this meet. Jenna Dexter tackled the 400 freestyle for the first time in her swimming career and swam it very well. Street commented, “We continue to work on her pacing and breath control and this could be a greater race for her.”

Alayna Gloe, Lincoln Holscher, Reese Cronen & Ty Wellnitz all competed for the first time in a long course pool. “The straight 50 meters can be a long ways for the younger ones but they did awesome and I am proud of their times,” said Street.

William Karels and Emma DeBoer were Milbank’s  top time cutters with major drops in multiple events. Will cut 39.78 seconds in the 200 breaststroke and Emma dropped 46.60 seconds in the 200 backstroke. “That is extraordinary and rare for someone in their age group,” said Street.

The relay teams competed well, the 12 & under boys relay team of Trey Gloe, Liam Street, Carter Gloe & Grant VanPeursem finished first in both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays. The 13 & over 200 freestyle relay team of Jessica VanPeursem, Maddox Hanson, William Karels and Amaya Street also captured a first place finish.

Swimmers of the Meet were: Jessica VanPeursem and Maurina Street.

Street commented, “Jessica took on multiple long events over the weekend, saw time drops in 8 of her events and punched her state ticket with a new event in the 200 butterfly. This is the first time Jessica has qualified for the State A Championship meet, its a great feeling to tell her she qualified.”

Maurina had a very strong meet with 10 state qualifying swims, 8 time cuts and top high pointer. Maurina broke 5 MALST records: two 2011 records set by Hannah Tietjen in the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke, a 2015 record held by A. Street in the 200 freestyle, Rylie Overby’s 2017 record in the 100 breast and a record in the 50 backstroke currently held by herself.

The Milbank Invitational will be June 23rd.
