“Ten dual wins may not mean much to some programs in the state, but it ties our school record,” said MHS Girls Tennis Coach Jim Dahl. The 2018 Lady Bulldogs team tied the record Tuesday, September 18.

Milbank hosted both Lennox and Roncalli teams. In the first match, Milbank took on the Lady Orioles from Lennox. Six of the seven Lady Bulldogs defeated their opponent in singles and all of them put up a “W” in doubles. The final score was 9-0 in favor of the Milbank.

Coach Dahl said, “Most of the sets were won at zero, one, and two versus Lennox, as their players have certainly improved. But, results show that our players have made great strides, as well. When you play a less experienced team, it’s a concern that you might relax too much and play down a level, so I was glad to see our team put pressure on them right away and remain consistent throughout the match.”

Following that win, the Lady Bulldogs took on the Lady Cavaliers from Roncalli. MHS sophomore Halli Essington won her singles and her doubles matches (with Hattie Muellenbach.) “That was a big win for Halli (regarding seeding for state),” Dahl added. Although the rest of the team played competitively, Roncalli won the rest of the matches.

Dahl said, “Rhianna Cantine played very well at No. 2 singles moving out to a comfortable lead, but her opponent fought back to lead 8-7.” Cantine eventually lost the match at 8-10. Hattie Muellenbach at No. 4 singles also jumped out to an early lead, but her opponent fought back to take the victory at 9-11.

Saturday, September 22, the Lady Bulldogs travel to Brookings.
