The Milbank Girls Tennis Team traveled to play in the Brookings Triangular on Saturday, September 22. “There was an extra incentive for players to win this match – to set a new school record. They came through with flying colors!” said MHS Coach Jim Dahl. No team in the 20-year history of Lady Bulldogs tennis has earned 11 dual victories in a regular season. “Plus,” Dahl says, “the 2018 team still has two matches remaining in the season.”

At the triangular, the Bulldog Girls came out on fire. In the first match against Brookings, they earned wins in four of the six singles matches. Rhianna Welberg, Hattie Muellenbach, Jenna Johnson, and Alexis Ninneman won at No. 3 through No. 6 singles to put Milbank up 4-2 going into doubles play.

“This took some pressure off as we only needed one of the doubles,” Dahl said. “When Jenna (Johnson) and Alexis (Ninneman) won at #No. 3, it sealed our win. Halli Essington and Hattie Muellenbach put some frosting on the cake winning at No. 1.” With these victories, the girls hit a new school record for most wins in a season.

After defeating Brookings, the Milbank team faced Yankton. Dahl commented, “We seemed a little tired after the Brookings win, but I felt our players dug in and competed well against a fresh Yankton squad. Five of the nine sets were competitive midway through, but Yankton played better in the latter half to win all of those.

The girls’ season winds down this week: The match on September 24 at Granite Falls, Minnesota was rained out, and the final home match on Thursday, September 27, at 4 p.m.  will be against Benson, Minnesota.
