The Milbank Area Lions Swim Team plunged into the water against some heavy competition at the Candy Cane Invitational in Watertown on December 2. Maddox Hanson in the 200 breastroke, and Jessica VanPeursem in the 400IM took home first place finishes.

Coach Jodi Street said, “We put in a lot of yards at practice, so, I was hoping to see some nice time cuts, but they surprised me with how much. Maddox Hanson dropped 6.52 seconds, Hope Karels 10.37 seconds, and Savanna Osowski 8.21 seconds – all in the 200 freestyle event. Josie Riveland, who is new to our team this year, dropped time in all four of her events. She posted a seven-second drop in her 100 breaststroke and a 10 second cut in her 200 freestyle.”

Other top achievements during the meet were more state-qualifying times. Street elaborated, “Maddox Hanson punched his ticket to the state meet with a state-qualifying swim in his 50 freestyle. Also adding to their events are: Savanna Osowksi in three events -the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 200 freestyle; and Amaya Street in the 50 freestyle, 100 fly, 200 breaststroke, and 200 freestyle.”

Next for the Sealions is the Mitchell Invitational December 7-8. This meet features a new prelim/final format for MALST swimmers.

Savanna Osowski competes in the freestyle race                                                                                                                                                                             Jessica VanPeursem and Maddox Hanson prepare to start their backstroke race.
