The Bulldog gymnastics team traveled to Aberdeen for the 15-team Hub City Invitational on December 8. The team tallied 131.245 points – just .155 points shy of the highest team score in MHS history for gymnastics. In equally exciting news, the team set a new school record in the beam competition.

According to Head Coach Amber Fraasch, “The team set a new record of 34.295, crushing the old record of 33.500 we set (on the beam) at the state meet last year. On the way, we went four for five no-falls, had four state-qualifying scores, three personal bests, and a top-10 finish.”

The team had the same number of state-qualifying beam scores in this one meet as they recorded in their entire season last year. Milbank placed third out of the 15 teams on beam. Only Watertown and Mitchell, the top two teams in the state in Class A and Class AA, outscored them.

In another set of firsts in the beam competition: Aubrey Fraasch competed first for MHS in her first event at her first varsity meet. Coach Fraasch said, “After taking a nasty fall on a new skill in warm-ups, she regrouped and completed the first no-fall beam routine of the day… her tenacity paid off, as she was rewarded with her first state-qualifying score of 8.350.

Mackenzie Weinkauf competed second. Fraasch said, “Mackenzie’s routine…landed her on the podium with a sixth place finish against some of the toughest competition in the state. Her 9.095 was a personal best and her first state-qualifying score.”

Greta Snaza performed the third no-fall beam routine. She also broke her personal best beam score by .625 points, which she only recently had set during the first meet of the season. Greta’s 8.525 was her first state- qualifying score on the beam.

Dani Yamaura delivered a no-fall beam routine in the clutch position and was rewarded with her second state- qualifying score.

Coach Fraasch commented, “This was the most consistent and successful meet I have seen in the 11 years I have been coaching. The girls hit 19 of 20 routines and did not miss a beat during a long day against some very difficult competition.”
