Roger Fenhaus

Roger R. Fenhaus, age 84, of Wilmot, SD, died on February 26, 2019, at the Wilmot Care Center in Wilmot, SD.

Funeral services for Roger Fenhaus will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank, SD, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Caleb Schewe officiating. Visitation will take place on Monday, March 4, 2019, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Kilborn Cemetery, Corona, SD.

Roger Roland Fenhaus was born on February 24, 1935, to Raymond and Marie (Tietjen) Fenhaus at St. Bernard’s Hospital in Milbank, SD. He was one of six children which included two brothers: Donald and Victor; and three sisters: Ann Marie, Helen, and Joyce.

Roger grew up on the family farm near Wilmot, SD and attended Garfield #5 country school through the eighth grade. His father, Raymond, died in 1943 when Roger was eight years of age and his brother, Donald, was ten. The farm was rented out and both of the boys worked as farm hands for their neighbors, the Overberg and Sandbakken families, until they were in their early teens. At this time, they took on the responsibility of farming the family land.

Roger had an excellent dairy herd of high producing cows. He was always striving to improve their dairy production record. The herd was sold in 1986, and he continued to raise beef cattle and farm the land until retiring in 2018. Roger remained on the family farm until 2015 when he bought a building site located three miles to the south of the original farm site. He resided there until January of 2019, when he moved to the Wilmot Care Center in Wilmot.

Roger was an avid reader and enjoyed the new location where he watched and fed the birds.

Roger’s nephew, Shawn Cameron, spent much time at the farm helping Roger when he was needed, taking care of the cows and farming in general. In later years, a neighbor, Dallas Schmeling, assisted Roger in taking care of the farm.

Roger is survived by his brother, Victor Fenhaus of Lakewood, CO; sisters: Ann Marie (John) Larson of Wellington, CO; and Joyce (Curt) Temple of Watertown, SD; niece, Kimberly (Stephen) Keiss of Wellington, Co; nephews: Bradley (Laurie) Larson of Longmont, CO; Shawn (Christine) Cameron of Watertown, SD; and Aaron (Christina) Cameron of Valley Center, CA; friend, Dallas Schmeling; extended family members; and friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Raymond and his mother, Marie; a brother, Donald; and a sister, Helen.
