Tracy Upton and Dick Schwandt were reelected to their positions on the Milbank School District Board of Education at the election on June 4. Upton received 253 votes; Schwandt, 200; and Eric Strobl 121. Just 6.64 percent (307), of the 4,623 eligible voters exercised their right to cast a ballot.
The votes were canvassed during the school board meeting on June 10. Superintendent Tim Graf responded to the low voter turnout during the meeting by stating, “Sounds like a low turnout, but when you look at other districts and their turnout for separate school boards elections, this is not unusual. It might even be high. When you don’t have a combined election, people don’t feel motivated to come out and vote.”
