The MHS boys golf team was challenged by a tough course at the Watertown Invitational on Tuesday, September 24. “The course was tipped out and played tough with thick roughs,” explained head coach Mark Keeton. “Hitting the fairway off the tee was key to success.”

Jake Trevett led the Bulldogs with a 45th place finish. He shot a plus-18 round of 90. Eli Fischer tied for 65th place with a 99, and Logan Meyer landed in 72nd place with a 110. Eric Van Sambeek tied for 74th place. Carter Phinney placed 79th.

“The boys competed hard, but we hurt ourselves on and around the greens,” Keeton said. The Bulldogs placed 13th as a team with a final score of 420. Watertown won the meet with a 309. Harrisburg took second with a 311, and Rapid City Stevens finished third with a 313. Rounding out the field were: Aberdeen Central, 315; Mitchell, 325; Pierre, 343; Brookings, 343; Sioux Valley, 348; Watertown JV, 353; Aberdeen Roncalli, 357; Huron, 358; Watertown
Gold, 394; and Flandreau, 446.

The Bulldogs wrap up their regular season on Thursday, September 26, in Sisseton. They travel to Volga on Monday, September 30, for the Region 1A meet in hopes of advancing to the 2019 Boys’ State Class AA Golf Tournament. The state meet is held in Vermillion on Monday and Tuesday, October 7-8.

“I like where we are at right now,” said Keeton. “We have continued to improve all season. As a coach, that is all I can ask for. We will focus on hitting the fairways, putting, and chipping around the greens as we wind things down.”
