Delmer A. Cardwell, age 95, of Milbank, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at St. Williams Care Center in Milbank.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, at Central United Methodist Church in Milbank. Reverend Dr. DeVern Schwenn and Pastor Kristi Liebe will officiate. Burial will be in Osceola Cemetery #1 in Marvin, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Delmer Albert Cardwell was born on April 24, 1924, in rural Wilmot, SD. He was the son of Albert and Ethel (Fitz) Cardwell. Delmer left his home at an early age to face the world. He worked as a handyman for various farms around the area until he served in the United States Navy. Del was united in marriage with the love of his life, Betty Lou Thorpe, on December 1, 1946. They were blessed with two daughters: Georgia Lee and Colleen Rae.

Following his Navy service, Del and Betty began farming near Marvin, SD. They also owned Bet’s Café in Marvin. Del worked for the railroad for many years before they moved to Richfield, MN. Del worked for Hormel as a meat cutter. Following Del’s retirement, he and Betty returned to South Dakota and settled in Milbank.

Del was very proficient in wood working and car repair. He helped many friends and relatives with repairs and home additions. He was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church in Milbank. His family will cherish the kind, gentle man that he was.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law: Colleen and Ray Schnable of Pasadena, MD; his son-in-law: Tom Reiffenberger of Detroit Lakes, MN; his grandchildren: Tricia Page, Andrew (Lynsey) Reiffenberger, Justin (Nicole) Reiffenberger, Molly (Nick) Fairbanks; his great-grandchildren: Nolan, Sophie, and Ella Page; Grace, Charlie, Oliver, Jaxon, and Grady Reiffenberger; brothers: Larry Cardwell and Gary Cardwell; sisters: Fay Webster and Shirley Steen; and many nieces and nephews.

Del was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Ethel; his wife, Betty; his daughter, Georgia; his sisters: Phyllis Cardwell and Alberta Gath; and brothers: Delton Cardwell and Elden Cardwell.
