Marion Mischel brought home a second-place trophy from the 2020 South Dakota State Debate & IE Tournament. Marion earned the trophy in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate division at the tournament held in Huron from March 6-7. “This trophy is a true victory for Marion,” said Kathy Tyler volunteer debate coach. “With no debate class at MHS this year, Marion had to find other ways to learn — the vast majority of the time on her own.”

Peyton Wiese, Max Lightfield, Aiden Ludvigson, and DeAndre French competed in the Public Forum division. The two teams did not make it to the final rounds, but received excellent comments on their ballots,” Tyler said. “This is the first year of debate for three of the members —Max, Aiden, and Peyten. They will form a strong base for next year’s team.” Spearfish won first place in the Sweepstakes Team Awards, Sturgis Brown was second, and Lennox took third.

Junior Marion Mischel holds her second place state debate trophy. Public Forum debaters: Front – Peyten Wiese. Back ( l. to r.) Max Lightfield, Aiden Ludvigson, and De Andre French.
