The Grant County Christian Service Council in conjunction with Feeding South Dakota held a food giveaway on May 6 in Milbank. The giveaway was staged in the MHS parking lot. Co-coordinator Brenda Maass says, “We used the same system as we used for the emergency food giveaway, and we were able to get over 150 vehicles through the line in less than one hour.” In all, 240 families received a box of food.

The 10,924 pounds of food was distributed with the assistance of 24 community volunteers, three Milbank police officers, and a Glacial Lakes Squad Trooper. A volunteer from Valley Queen helped to unload the truck with a telehandler provided by Valley Queen. Valley Queen also donated cheese for all recipients.

Maass says, “We were able to distribute all of the perishables, but ended up with boxes of non-perishable food. Those boxes were donated to the food pantry.”

The next giveaway is scheduled for June 24. Keep up with the Valley Express for details on the time, location, and method of distribution.
