The Milbank Ball Diamond Association met Wednesday, June 10, and approved the start of the 2020 baseball season for upper-age athletes and teams. There will be no youth baseball for kids under 12 this summer. According to Darin Mertens, secretary-treasurer of the organization, the MBDA made the decision after the Milbank City Council approved the opening of all parks in Milbank at their meeting Monday, June 8.

The state VFW board and local baseball association are working to secure players for teams in the 13-14 Junior Teeners, 15-16 Teeners, and 17-19 Legion groups. The Legion team will run under the state VFW group this summer instead of the national and state Legion associations as determined several weeks ago. Players, coaches, and schedules are still being worked out. Mertens anticipates this will be a short season of possibly 10-12 games per team.

Are you age 13-19 and want to play baseball this summer? Register on the Milbank Ball Diamond Association website.

The Milbank Fire Chiefs also begin the 2020 amateur baseball season with their first game on Wednesday, June 17, at 8 p.m. at Aurora. The Chiefs’ first home game is set for Wednesday, June 24, at 8 p.m. with Volga. They also will have a condensed season. The state tournament is scheduled for August 5-16 in Mitchell.
