Sue (Volkart) Spangenberg

Susan “Sue” Lynn (Volkart) Spangenberg, 73, of Stockholm, SD, passed away Monday, May 6, 2024, at Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, at the Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. “Remembrance” Luncheon will be held at the Stockholm Community Center from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024. 

Sue was born on December 1, 1950, in LeRoy, MN, the daughter of Wilbur and Ruby (Whiteside) Volkart, and grew up there, graduating high school in 1969. Sue met her husband, Clay in 1986 and they were married on November 25, 1988, in Akron, Ohio.  Besides Akron, they lived in Fort Sheridan, IL, Mundelein, IL, Norfolk, VA, Upper Marlboro, MD, and Fort Benning, GA, before landing in Stockholm in 2008, where they built their retirement home.

Sue is survived by her husband Clayton Spangenberg of Stockholm, SD; two sons, Brian Hughes (Beth) of Evans, GA, and Chad Hughes of Watertown, SD; three stepdaughters, Cassandra Spangenberg of Concord, NC; Michelle Spangenberg of Wendell, NC; and Corrin Rhea of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Michael Volkart (Cindy) of Prior Lake, MN, and Jere Volkart (Nancy) of Watertown, SD; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Because many friends and relatives live well east of Stockholm, Clay will take a trip to visit all of them in July and August.
