Milbank Elementary and Milbank Middle School entered 117 musicians in the South Dakota Bandmasters Grades 5-8 Band Contest held April 10-11 in Milbank. The event included over 310 entries. Students from Big Stone City, Browns Valley, Castlewood, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Ortonville, and Wilmot also attended.

Performances were rated based on tone, intonation, technique, interpretation, musical effect, and other performance factors. Possible ratings included Superior (I), Excellent (II), Good (III), and Fair (IV). Judges can choose to enhance the ratings with a plus or minus. The instrumentals from Milbank received 19 Superior Plus, 93 Superior, one Excellent Plus, and 30 Excellent ratings.

Evy Liebe, Camryn Sovell, Kaitlyn Brandenburger, Sheila Dailie, Bob Frink, Kristy Tostenson, Pam Neugebauer, and Deb Rausch assisted the students. Mrs. Susan Karels is the band director for grades 6-12 in Milbank. Mrs. Karlene Thomas, Rausch, and Karels serve as the fifth grade band instructors.
