During 2025 Teacher Appreciation Week, the MHS chapter of Educators Rising honored teachers and staff who made a difference this year. On May 7,... Trapp, Karels, and Rieger Honored for Making a Difference

During 2025 Teacher Appreciation Week, the MHS chapter of Educators Rising honored teachers and staff who made a difference this year. On May 7, a ceremony was held to highlight  Abbey Trapp, Susan Karels, and Tammy Rieger for their outstanding impact on students and school life. The educators were nominated by a student and each received a commemorative t-shirt.

Abbey Trapp, a special education teacher, was honored by student Rose Marvel. “You put so much time and effort into everyone’s daily lives…you help them become better people,” Rose said. She also thanked Trapp for her constant positivity and for introducing her to the Special Olympics.

Susan Karels, Milbank’s band teacher, was described as “the greatest and funniest teacher ever,” by student Carlos Olivares Zuniga.  According to Carlos, Karels’ dedication and energy in and out of the classroom continue to inspire.

Tammy Rieger, the high school secretary, received heartfelt thanks from Josie Riveland. “You were there for me when I was struggling the most…you made a difference in this Bulldog’s life,” Josie said.

In addition to the individual tributes, speakers at the event reflected on the meaning of teaching by describing it as “more than a profession — a calling.” Poems and readings emphasized the compassion, leadership, and humanity educators bring to students’ lives every day.

During the event, the student members of Educators Rising introduced themselves and shared a positive thing they will take with them from the group this year. The ceremony also served as a powerful reminder of the quiet and lasting impact of all teachers. Nicci Stengel and Robin Schuelke serve as the co-advisers of Educators Rising at MHS.
