Rosaline “Rosie” Shipe, 86, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Ortonville Area Health Services Hospital in Ortonville.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rosen, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday and Fr. Shawn Polman will officiate the service. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery in Wahpeton, ND.
Rosaline “Rosie” Mary Shipe was born on February 17, 1939, on the family farm near Rosen, MN, to Alphonse and Eva (Mongold) Schmieg. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and attended school in Rosen.
After completing her education, Rosie began working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, serving in numerous care facilities throughout her career. On September 17, 1960, she married the love of her life, Peter “Pete” Shipe, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Together they lived in several communities before settling in Gwinner, ND, where they joyfully adopted their three children: Jan, Theresia, and Elliott.
While Rosie was a dedicated and compassionate CNA, her greatest pride and joy was being a homemaker and the numerous treats and breads she used to make. Every Tuesday was bread baking day and all the neighboring farmsteads would just happen to stop by to say hi and Rosie would have a loaf in hand to share. She retired from nursing work in the late 1990s, and in 1998, she and Pete moved to Strawberry Lake, MN. Following Pete’s passing in 2004, Rosie moved to Ortonville in 2006, and later to Fairway View in 2023.
Rosie had a passion for cooking and baking; her famous lemon bars were a family favorite and a treasured recipe her granddaughter Brooke continues to try to perfect. She loved visiting with friends and family and deeply cherished her time at Fairway View. Above all, Rosie’s greatest joy came from her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
She is survived by her children: Jan (Diane) Shipe of Clear Lake, WI; Theresia (Jon) Rieger of Grand Forks, ND; and Elliott Shipe of Phoenix, AZ; two granddaughters: Paige (Jeremy) Ulvog of Grand Forks, ND; and Brooke (Luke) Whalen of Grand Forks, ND; two great-grandchildren: Nash Ulvog and Rhett Ulvog of Grand Forks, ND; siblings: Lawrence (Ann) Schmieg of Big Stone City, SD; Eugene Schmieg of Big Stone City, SD; and Leon (Marcia) Schmieg of Big Stone City, SD; brother-in-law, George (Linda) Shipe of Butte, MT; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Alphonse and Eva Schmieg; beloved husband, Peter “Pete” Shipe; grandson, Brody Shipe; and siblings: Clarence Schmieg and Irene Karels.
