The Lady Bulldogs overpowered the Lady Quarriers of Dell Rapids in the third quarter of play to take their second victory of the season... Lady Bulldogs Shaft the Quarriers

The Lady Bulldogs overpowered the Lady Quarriers of Dell Rapids in the third quarter of play to take their second victory of the season at the Milbank Armory on Saturday, December 13. Milbank’s hustle, combined with some well-timed steals, fast breaks, and intense pressure helped them to clinch a hard-earned win at 58-52.

Millbank trailed by two points during the opening minutes of the game and still lagged behind at 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. Although Dell Rapids was ahead by as many as five points in the second quarter, Milbank went on a run to go ahead 30-27 with three minutes remaining in the half. Dell Rapids battled back and got within a point at 32-31 just in time for the break.

Back on the court after halftime, the Lady Dawgs turned up the gas. Working from a three point lead at 36-33 with five minutes to go in the third, they allowed Dell Rapids  just one more bucket.  Milbank added a total of 11 points in the third frame. Dell Rapids added just four points. The quarter ended with Milbank still in the lead at 43-35. 

The Lady Bulldogs kept up the pace in the final quarter. They put up seven points to Dell Rapids’ one point and pushed their lead to 50-36. But Lady Quarriers  refused to quit.  They chipped away at Milbank’s lead, narrowing it to eight  and eventually to six with less than two minutes on the clock by posting 17 points in the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs, however, stood their ground while knocking down 15 points to deliver the win to the home crowd at 58-52.

Belle Paulli scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Milbank.  Avery Schuneman made 17 points, six assists, and six rebounds. Susie Schuneman scored 16 points, including two 3-pointers, and added two assists and two steals. Anna Neugebauer hauled down 11 rebounds and added three points, three assists, and two blocks. Bree Townsend claimed eight rebounds. She also made an assist, a block, and a steal. Adison Pauli hit a triple and added an assist. She secured three boards.

The Lady Bulldogs hit 47 percent of their shots from the floor, including 27 percent from long range. They also downed four of 15 for 27 percent at the line.

For Dell Rapids, Rorie Thoreson scored a game-high 20 points. Jersi Schultz made 11 points. The duo led the Lady Quarriers in rebounds at five apiece. Claire Witte also posted 11 points and added four rebounds. Dell Rapids hit 31 percent of their shots from the floor, including 26 percent from beyond the arc. They made 56 percent – five of nine– from the charity stripe.
