Six-year-old Kimber Downes is ready to say “Hakuna Matata.” Kimber’s wish of visiting Hawaii is about to come true.

She and her family will soon be whisked away to  the Disney Aulani Resort and Spa in Kolani, Hawaii, courtesy of Make-a-Wish of South Dakota and Montana and her Adopt-a-Wish partners Valley Queen, Jason and Heidi Mischel of Milbank, and Max and Brooke Pfeiffer of Aberdeen.

Amy Bruns and Tara Anderson, representatives of Make-a-Wish, hosted a surprise party for Kimber and her parents Justin and Brigette Downes at Unity Square on Friday January 2. Several members of Kimber’s family and her Make-a-Wish sponsors attended to celebrate the reveal. In September 2024, Kimber was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma –a rare cancer of soft tissues, most common in children. She finished her treatments last July.
