
MHS debater Keira Steffen took third place on Friday and tied for first on Saturday. during the Student Congress competition at the Sioux Falls Lincoln Silver Bowl held January 17-18. Steffen received the second place trophy due to tie- breaking rules, which counted the number of speeches given. John Hatton of Brookings High School took first place in the event.
In the new event Impromptu, Bri Hicks and Elexia Quintanilla placed third and sixth respectively. During Impromptu competitions, speakers choose a topic from a list of three choices. They then prepare and present a speech in seven minutes. “It’s a challenge, but both did just fine,” stated Kathy Tyler, head coach for Milbank.
Bella Hicks and Kinley VanHoorn participated in Informative Speaking against varsity speakers. According to Tyler, the field was tough, so the Lady Bulldogs’ ballots were very complimentary.
On Saturday, Bella Hicks and VanHoorn tied for fourth in Public Forum and missed the semi’s and the stage by 1.5 points in preliminary rounds—out of a possible 200 points. VanHoorn placed seventh in speaker points; Bella Hicks placed eleventh out of 21 speakers. Bri Hicks placed second in speaker points against 18 Lincoln-Douglas debaters, but she could not break into the quarter finals with her 2-3 record.
“I cannot say enough good things about Milbank’s debater,” Tyler stated. The competition is tough, but they all do Milbank proud.”
What’s next? The Roberts Tournament in Watertown will be held January 23-24. Concessions will be available. The annual scavenger hunt will be held on Friday. The Roberts Tournament will be the last event focused on na
