Abigail Porter and Emily Neugebauer, both Milbank eighth graders, won the local 2025-2026 Patriot’s Pen essay contest sponsored by VFW Post #3486 and the VFW Auxiliary. Porter received first place. Neugebauer took second. Porter and Neugebauer also received a certificate and a monetary prize.

Conducted annually, this competition gives students an opportunity to express their views on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?” The same topic is used across the U.S. The contest is open to all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students, including home-schoolers.

Milbank’s top essay advanced to district judging. District winners go to the state contest. The state essay winner receives an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. National winners receive scholarships that range from first place at $5000, second place at $4500, and third place at $3500. Over $1.4 million in awards are given out annually.
