Milbank fought their way back from a 23-point deficit in the third quarter to get within six points at 50-56 in the fourth quarter during their game against Tri-Valley at the DAK XII/NEC Boys Clash in Madison on Saturday, January 31. A flood of fouls by the Bulldogs sent Tri-Valley to the stripe for 20 shots, and the Mustangs claimed 16 of them. That, combined with Brady Jewett racking up 27 points for Tri-Valley (TV), cost the Bulldogs the game at 59-50.
Logan Diede, head coach for Milbank said, “We simply put ourselves in far too big of a hole out of the gates and into the third quarter, which made it really tough to come all the way back against a team like Tri-Valley that has a high-level scoring guard and one that forced us to shoot from the outside on the offensive end.”
Neither team scored until two minutes of the game were already in the books.Jewett put up a basket, and Lincoln Holscher followed it with a jumper to get both teams off and running at 2-2. Lawson Schneiderman added a layup to get Tri-Valley to 4-2. A too-hot-to handle pass by the Bulldogs sent the ball out of bounds and possession back to the Mustangs. Tristen Bunde’s three-ball was no good, and Sam Rick’s shot also fell short for Milbank.
Mason Hemme then hit a triple for TV to put the score at 7-2. After the rebound by Milbank, the Mustangs got a steal and went back the other way for a layup to put the score at 9-2. Jack Howard then put one through the hoop for the Dawgs to get the score to 9-4.

Rick sent up a three, but it fell short, and Holscher put it back to secure two for the Bulldogs. Time was running out as Jewett’s shot was short at the buzzer. The score stayed at 12-6 to end the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, TV missed a shot, and Howard had two shots blocked by Bunde. Bunde then went in for a reverse layup and drew the foul. The extra shot was good. His old-fashioned three put the Mustangs up 15-6. Rick was then fouled on his way to the rim and he stepped to the line for two. He landed both to get the Bulldogs closer at 15-8.
Jewett missed another shot and so did Rick, but Holscher tipped Rick’s back in for Milbank and the score went to 15-10. With 4:30 to go in the half, Bunde made a two, and Jewett also landed one from the top of the key to get the Mustangs out in front at 19-10. TV then fleeced the Bulldogs two times in a row, and Jewett got a chance to land a triple to put the score at 22-10. Milbank was called for a 3-second violation, and Jewett struck again for two. He also drew the foul. It was good to mark his 10th point of the game and push the Mustangs ahead at 25-10.
Layten Osowski was fouled by TV, but it was away from the ball. Rick’s shot wouldn’t fall, but Howard was fouled on the putback and he headed to the line for two. His second attempt dropped in to get the score to 25-11 with Milbank trailing by 14. The court cleared for halftime with the score at 33-16.
In the third quarter, Jewett missed his first shot and TV acquired their third turnover by double-dribbling. J. Scoular fouled Jewett, but it was before his shot. Emmett Snaza fouled Ty Oyen and he went to the line. Oyen hit one of t two free throws to put the score at 34-16.
