Seventh grader Tatum Brehmer was the winner of the Milbank Spelling Bee. She is the daughter of Chris and Nicole Brehmer.
On Saturday, February 7, Tatum will be competing at the South Dakota State Spelling Bee in Mitchell on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. Contestants will also include one student representative from a maximum of 40 enrolled school districts across the state. Last year the winning word was meringue. The winner advances to the national contest.
The 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place in May in Washington, D.C.
Last year’s winning word at the national level was one of the longest words in the bee’s 100-year history –éclaircissement.
