Scoular Scores 17 in Battle of the Bulldogs

The Milbank boys basketball team traveled south for the annual Battle of the Bulldogs on Monday, February 23. It was an even match – each team came into the game with a 10-8 season record. Milbank caught a turnover bug early, though, and racked up 17 miscues that cost them the game. They suffered the loss at 58-44.
Madison won the tip-off, but they couldn’t shake the Milbank defense and ended up with an empty possession deep in the shot clock. Milbank hit a hot streak and went on a 7-0 run. Sam Rick made the first basket of the game at the seven-minute mark. Madison’s Myles Schneider answered with a bucket. Milbank didn’t score after the rebound, and Madison got the ball, but Jack Howard pulled off a steal. Jeter Scoular dropped in another two for Milbank. Ryan Keeton followed with a 3-pointer bomb to get the Bulldogs of the North up 7-2.
Milbank’s lead evaporated when Madison also went on a 7-0 streak. M. Schneider got two on a putback, and Casyn Crabtree nailed a triple to tie things up at 7-7. Shane Veenhof then added a jumper to put Madison ahead 9-7.
After a timeout, Lincoln Holscher got the ball to Keeton, and Keeton blasted in a triple to get Milbank back to within one point at 11-10. Madison’s Henry Veenhof popped in a two at the 48-second mark. Milbank lost the ball out of bounds to give Madison another chance to score. During the play, Milbank’s defense smothered Madison, and Henry Veenhof had to kick it in gear with two seconds on the shot clock. He plowed through Milbank and picked up an offensive foul instead of two points. The first quarter ended with Milbank trailing at 13-10.
The second quarter started with turnover number three. H. Veenhof connected for two points. (15-10) Under the six-minute mark. Keeton sent a sweet pass to Holscher who dropped it in for a basket. Brody Cummins –a former resident of Milbank – answered with a two to put the score at 17-12 in Madison’s favor. Howard made a smooth move to Osowski and Osowski dropped in the basket. (17-14) Scoular added two free throws to get Milbank back to within one at 17-16. S. Veenhof then hit a jumper and H. Veenhof collected one point at the charity stripe. (20-16) S. Veenhof downed a nice 3-pointer, but Scoular bit back with an even nicer 3-pointer for Milbank. (23-19) S. Veenhof tallied one more point at the line to get the score to 24-19 at halftime.
Nolan Nielsen got an early bucket in the third quarter for Madison. (26-19) Holscher hit one off the glass for Milbank, and H. Veenhof popped in a two for Madison to put the score at 28-21. M. Schneider got one to the rim for Madison. (30-21) S. Veenhof hit one off the window and also drew a foul. He made the extra point to put Madison out in front 33-21. S. Veenhof hit another two-pointer. Rick replied with a 3-pointer, but Madison had pulled away by 11. (35-24) S. Veenhof hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the score to 41-24. Scoular rustled up a 3-pointer to keep Milbank in the game at 41-27 at the two-minute mark. Scoular attempted a three that wouldn’t fall, but added a two-pointer before the quarter ended to move the score to 41-29.
The fourth quarter started slowly. Howard put up one point at the line for Milbank and M. Schneider put up two at the line for Madison. (43-30) Henry Veenhof landed a reverse layup and Rick and Scoular each downed a two to get the score to 45-34.
Howard assisted Scoular for another two from underneath, and M. Schneider got one tick at the line to put the score at 46-36. Rick had picked up his fourth foul. Emmett Snaza made a spin to roll one off the glass to get Milbank within eight at 46-38. Cummins downed a 3-pointer for Madison, but there was a foul away from the ball before the shot, and it didn’t count. The score stayed at 46-38 until Nielsen dropped in two. (48-38)
The fouls then started to pile up. Keeton picked up his fourth personal by bumping M. Schneider. Schneider’s basket had gone in, but his extra point was no good. Nielsen headed to the line for two and sank both. 52-38. Cummins nicked Scoular in the act of shooting from behind the arc. Scoular stepped to the line to shoot three. He downed one to put the score at 52-39. With just one minute remaining on the clock, Nielsen was back riding the line and he sank one. ( 53-39) Keeton made a basket, but he was fouled by Madison and had to settle for one point from the stripe.(53-40)
Just in the game for Milbank, Harley Zemlicka drew the foul and he made the front half of two to get Milbank to 53-41. S. Veenhof got the rebound, and he took it all the way to the rim and in. Max Scoular fouled him on the play, but S. Veenhof missed his extra shot to end the game with 21 points. (55-41) Gavin Schneider hit a last minute 3-ball for Madison, and Bowsher responded with a 3-pointer for MIlbank to end the game with a flourish at 58-44.
Scoular led Milbank with 17 points and two assists. He added seven rebounds and a steal. Keeton and Rick each put in seven points. Rick also made one rebound. Keeton contributed one assist, two rebounds, one block, and four steals. Holscher made four points. He added two rebounds and one assist. Howard scored one point and two assists. He also grabbed a rebound and a steal. Bowsher made three points and a steal. Snaza made two points, one rebound, and one block. Osowski downed two points and snagged two rebounds. Zemlicka made one point. Ethan Owen got one assist and one rebound.
The Bulldogs hit 44 percent of their shots from the floor and 30 percent from long range. They made six of 10 from the free throw line.
Madison was led by S. Veenhof, who had 21 points, four assists, five rebounds, and three steals. M. Schneider made 13 points and one rebound and a steal. H. Veenhof added nine points and three steals. Nielsen scored seven points and one assist. He also made six rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. G. Schneider recorded three points. Crabtree made three points and one assist. He also got one rebound and one steal. Cummins scored two points and one assist. He made four rebounds and one steal. Nolan Fischer put up two assists, one rebound, and two steals. Ethan Sims contributed one assist and a rebound.
Madison made 54 percent of their shots from the floor. They hit 45.5 percent from long range and matched Milbank at the free throw line at nine of 15 for 60 percent.
